We are currently developing a LMS and are looking to integrate a SCORM player into the code. Can anyone recommend on that is not too cost prohibitive. Or is it even needed in the LMS? I know there are some SCORM players that are available as downloads such as Reload. Does the SCORM player have to be integrated into the LMS for accurate reporting and tracking. Sorry but I'm new to this SCORM thing.

We at Rustici Software offer an independent player that easily integrates with any LMS. To date, it has been installed in over 80 LMS's and it is widely recognized as being the most compatible SCORM 2004 player on the market. You can read more about it at http://www.scorm.com/products/scormengine.aspx. Feel free to give us a call or send an email to info at scorm.com if you have any questions or would like any more information.

You have asked a couple of questions so here is my attempt to answer them.

First we should address the need for a SCROM Player in your LMS. You only need a SCORM Player if you plan to use SCORM Compliant Content/Training. If you do, then Yes you must have a SCORM Conformant Player.

The Second thing to cover is if/why you should use SCORM conformant content/training. SCORM is a standard on how to create and display online training content in a consistent manner. This offers you several advantages over other options including a home grown approach. First off you can use a number of Great online training/content authoring tools and all of the tools worth using support publishing as SCROM conformant content. That make the job of creating the content/training much easier. Another great plus is that you can purchase other peoples content and so long as it is SCORM conformant it will work in your system. The last plus I will mention is that if you use an outside firm for content, you do not have to send this info on how to do it your way (is the system is home grown), but instead just let them know to publish it as SCORM and as long as they are worth using they can and will. This makes life much easier. Oh ya, I will also say, if you end up moving to another system, then having your content/training in SCORM will be great because any system worth having is going to support SCORM.

Ok, now that we have covered the “if” and “why” stuff, the next item is a player to integrate into your system. If you are looking for just the SCORM player and your environment supports ASP.Net then Rustici is a great option. Their pricing is not bad and their product is top notch. Another option would be to take a look at our system. Though we offer a full fledged LMS and not just a player, our price point and TCO is much lower than most standalone players let along full systems and it would not take much effort to decouple the player from our system and integrate it into yours. We even offer up to 80 hours of no cost development and consulting with every license. Again like with Rustici our product is and ASP.Net solution so your environment would need to support ASP.Net, however we offer more than just the player, we offer a full LMS that is integrated into a very robust CMS/Portal that offers great flexibility and of course the no cost development and consulting time that you could use to assist in integrating the player into your system.

I hope this post answered All of your questions, gave you a better understanding of SCORM, and helps you in finding the solution that is best for your requirements.
